I was actually really proud of how corny my promo AI video for the upcoming pet parade event I'm producing came out!!!

So, I texted a link to Ichabod.

He texted back: I like it! But I wouldn’t describe it as corny. It’s very creepy…the faces at the beginning, the disembodied dragon head floating next to the body…. And maybe most of all the juxtaposition of the weirdness with the wholesomeness

Uh oh, I asked. Is it TOO creepy to use as a promo?

It might be, he said. I appreciate the video as experimental art though 😀

Sigh. Back to the drawing board.

In other news, I installed the airconditioner in the Patrizia-torium window.

Yes, I do disapprove of the environmental impact of AC.

But this coming weekend, it's supposed to hit 95° F here in the quaint & scenic Hudson Valley. And a fan ain't gonna cut it for comfort in 95° heat.

As my favorite '80s band The Police reminds us:

When the world is running down
You make the best of what's still around

Cuddle Party

Everyone needs contact comfort sometimes. Not everyone has ample opportunities for this in facetime. So here is a chance for a cuddle party in cyberspace. Virtual cuddling can help people feel better.

We have a
cuddle room that comes with fort cushions, fort frames, sheets for draping, and a weighted blanket. A nest full of colorful egg pillows sits in one corner. There is a basket of grooming brushes, hairbrushes, and styling combs. A bin holds textured pillows. There is a big basket of craft supplies along with art markers, coloring pages, and blank paper. The kitchen has a popcorn machine. Labels are available to mark dietary needs, recipe ingredients, and level of spiciness. Here is the bathroom, open to everyone. There is a lawn tent and an outdoor hot tub. Bathers should post a sign for nude or clothed activity. Come snuggle up!

For the upcoming 4th of July, enjoy some of my previous posts about fireworks. Watch a video of fireworks going off and fireworks fail.

Today's Smoothie

Today we made a smoothie with:

1 cup Brown Cow vanilla yogurt
about 1 to 1 1/2 cups fresh seedless watermelon chunks
1 frozen banana
about 2/3 cup frozen strawberries
1 teaspoon lime juice

The result is bright pink and a little thicker with the frozen banana, with a notable watermelon flavor. This is a definite improvement over the previous version and I quite like it. \o/

Where do migratory birds have their home?

Below are just three screenshots from a series of 16 photos on the Instagram account of somadifusa (Laura Ortiz), of murals she and the tattoo artist Azul Luna (Instagram account azulunailustra) painted in Bogota, Colombia.

I'm captivated by these images both of traveling swallows, some bearing backpacks and baskets, some with shells on their back like hermit crabs, and of hearts that are also nests, or that morph into shells, or sprout flowers and eyes. "Home is where the heart is," or the heart makes the home

I need either validation that other fields of art have equally self-destructive discourse (not in the sense of "produces flame wars" but in the sense of "literally arguing against the existence of the field") OR confirmation that ttrpg discourse is uniquely contradictory and needs to be put down

Today is partly sunny, steamy, and hot.

I fed the birds.  Sparrows and house finches have been all over the feeders today.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 6/17/25 -- I checked the grass patch by the garden shed.  Something had eaten about half the seedling clover.  :/  So I sowed more Bee Lawn Mix, watered that, and watered the recently planted wild indigo.

EDIT 6/17/25 -- I took some pictures around the yard.

My wildflower garden is swarming with baby praying mantises, at least two hatches.  I've seen a tiny brown one and a slightly larger green one.  :D

I've seen a mourning dove in the forest garden.

EDIT 6/17/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 6/17/25 -- I picked a bag of mulberries along the street and in the savanna.

Fireflies are coming out.

EDIT 6/17/25 -- I trimmed low-hanging branches in the house yard.

I hauled a large branch to the ritual meadow and broke it up for the firepit.

My partner Doug has mowed the ritual meadow.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

last time , talk about bruce alan marcom . but this one might be more interest !

so here is thing - recently come across elowen fae , which link to the soul of wind ... as do many other apparent musicians . this perplex kossai . of those musicians , some do seem to be legitimate people with legitimate history , namely bigricepiano and tsuyun . but many others lack any history or presence elsewhere , and not older than 2023 - which coincide with release of suno .

the soul of wind main channel seem to have history back to 2014 , as channel where create ambient mixes of either personal compositions , or royalty free music that already exist . but more recently , this channel claim to be music label - did try to look on wayback machine to see if this ever change , but can not get to load , so that will have to be bust for now .

what really stump is that unsure who make this channel , and thus , what this situation is .
did this composer get burnout with this stream of uploads , and hide machine gen works behind false names ?
do this composer not care who contribute to label , even while others like bigricepiano proud to label work as no AI ?
is this composer even still on board anymore , or do this name belong to someone else now ?
could all of these people be genuine , legitimate musicians , even when just happen to appear like machine gen ? ( hahahahaha . )

still not really sure how to consistently identify machine gen music by sound - sort of just look for " brain popcorn vibes " at moment , but just vibes can not be hard and fast rule . but , do have another post on red flags with regards to channel history and presentation .

The Talented Mr. Ripley

Dreamed I had been drafted and was about to be flown off to a war in a foreign land, only I couldn't find my purse & was panicking because how could I fly if I didn't have any ID?

Somehow I knew, though, that this was only a dream and kept telling myself, Don't worry, your purse is where you always stash it—near your desk!

(Editorial note: I have a tendency to misplace things and waste hours looking for them, so over the years have trained myself to put logistical stuff—keys, bills, purse—in specific spots to track them. It's what passes for organization in my world.)

But knowing where my purse was in the woke world did not solve my quandary in the dream world. Where was my purse? And if I could not find it, what would they do to me?

Frantically, I began calling people I'd seen the night before to see if they knew.

Then, as the first soldiers in my squadron were lining up to board the plane, Mrs. Neighbor Ed showed up with my purse!

She put it down.

I tried to pick it up—but a filigree gold chain spilling out of the purse had somehow gotten caught in whatever she'd put the purse down on, so I couldn't move it. And I was getting frantic—Should I break the gold chain? But the gold chain is so beautiful!—when I woke up.

Decided yesterday to pretend that exercise is really, really baaaaad for you and that lolling around on the lounging couch watching every Ripley movie ever made & eating cookies is what scientists recommend for disease prevention and wellness promotion.

The Criterion Channel—Ichabod kindly gifted me a subscription—is doing a marathon.

My favorite Ripley is actually the recent Netflix The Talented Mr. Ripley. It's the truest to the novel. Most viewers hated it because it was shot in black and white—lush, colorful Italy? In black and white?—but I actually thought that was a brilliant choice in a film about deception because it emphasized the shots' composition, allowing you to see the bones of the piece. And Andrew Scott is very, very good in it, although the rest of the cast is uniformly awful.

The popular favorite is Anthony Minghella's The Talented Mr. Ripley with Matt Damon—fresh from Good Will Hunting!—in the title role. The gay undercurrents in this one are pushed from subtext to declamative, but I personally think that's too easy an out: Ripley does what he does and is who he is not because he is tortured by his own sexuality but because he's a complete sociopath.

And then, of course, there's Plein soleil whose Ripley is Alain Delon, the most beautiful human male ever born. Adonis only wishes he looked like Alain Delon in his youth! This one holds a special place in my heart because I first saw it when I was eight years old—my mother was too poor to be able to afford babysitters, so she always brought me with her when she went to see the foreign movies she so loved. This is the only Ripley in which Ripley is brought to justice—I suppose because it was made in 1960 and back in 1960, people hadn't yet started rooting for the sociopaths.

This YouTube video provides an excellent compare-and-contrast of Minghella's Ripley and Plein soleil:

MY DAYS ARE NUMBERED

...Not like that, I'm not dying, I just thought it would be funny to title the blog that. :P Rather, the days of me living with my parents are numbered, I've been with em for the past decade as a dependent since my mom has been working for the government since 2015, so I went with her when we first left, and the limit for me being able to stay with them is 23 and uhh... I turned 22 this month, so have like a year left with them. On one hand I'm finally glad to have the opportunity to live on my own, having wanted that for a LONG time but on the other hand it's kinda scary since this is the first time I'm gonna be like, living on my own, I'll need to go back to my hometown and find an apartment and a job, thankfully apartments aren't too ridiculous, like $1000 a month for a nice place (and I don't want a house anyways, not for a long time), and for a job my hometown has a military base so I can work an internship there, as I'm gonna be going back to school (well, an online one) for the next two years so I can get a proper bachelor's as opposed to just an associate's degree, so being able to get my foot in the door in terms of a proper career (still planning on going into IT and doing networking) is a massive help. just pray i can get a place where i can still play drums and not get endless noise complaints

The Great Farting Oxygen Event

This is the earliest mass extinction we know of on Earth, and it may well have been the worst.  However, it usually doesn't appear on the standard lists of major mass extinctions.

Currently we are in the Anthropocene, whether people want to admit it or not.  We are also in the midst of the Anthropocene Extinction, whether people want to admit it or not.  See the insect apocalypse, amphibian apocalypse, and bird apocalypse

Despite these grim statistics, humanity is not the most destructive species the Earth has ever known.  That honor goes to whatever organism first discovered fire, harnessed the power of the Sun, and farted so much oxygen that almost everything else died.

When "I'm literally 12" becomes abruptly and immediately true

For Alice, who asked me to write this.

One of the unique features of plurality is how people within the system don't have to be like the body. Just because they live in it doesn't mean they all must resemble it, or have their personal proprioception match up with the body’s external shape. This means that system members can vary in all kinds of ways - height/weight, ethnicity, species or body plan, and the topic of today’s essay: age.

It can be tricky sometimes for people to wrap their heads around what it means for a system member to look and be different from the body. After all, you’re not in their head with them, so all you have to go on perception-wise is the body, and it’s gonna look however old it is. What does it mean for someone to be 7 years old when their external body is 38? How should you interact with a system member who's much younger than the members you know? In what ways are internal children similar or different from external children? I'll be talking through the ways I’ve learned how to treat them well and care for them.

This 5-star island paradise doubles as a sea turtle rescue

In Malaysia, five islands form Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, a glittery turquoise oasis filled with coral reefs, parrotfish, seahorses, and green sea turtles.

Gaya, the largest of the five islands, is also home to the Gaya Island Resort: a luxury 5-star retreat nestled in an ancient rainforest that boasts stunning sea views, swim-up pools, and a spa village hidden amongst the mangroves.

But when guests have free time — between relaxing on massage tables and eating teppanyaki, shabu-shabu, and nabe — the resort challenges visitors to partake in local marine conservation efforts.

Ecotourism is a good way to get people involved, and maybe they'll want to stay involved.

Remigration vs. Refoulement

I've seen a lot of vocabulary abuse recently.

Remigration is the voluntary return to country of origin. If it's not voluntary, it's not remigration. This term covers things like freed slaves moving from America to Africa, or Syrian refugees going back to Syria now that some of them deem it safe. We need this term for such purposes, which right now means defending it from people who use it wrongly.

Refoulement is the forcible movement of refugees from the place they fled to back to the dangerous place they fled from. This is what the American government has done many times, such as sending boats full of Jewish refugees back to Nazi-infested Europe during World War II or the current transfer of refugees back to their country of origin. Call it what it is and cite the historic comparisons, where we've got evidence of people dying because of it.

I know there are many crafters on Dreamwidth but it seems nothing devoted to it has been updated in eons or has no admin or both. So I decided to open [community profile] everykindofcraft  for what it says in the name. A community where people can share their projects, either in process or completed, as well as ask for assistance with craft-related things.

The weather has been warm and wet here. Seen at the birdfeeders this week: a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, two mourning doves, a male cardinal, a catbird, a phoebe, a skunk, a fox squirrel, and at least 2 probably 3 bats. I've heard a red-bellied woodpecker but didn't see it. Privet, dogwood, and mock orange are done blooming. Privet and mock orange are winding down. Zucchini has flower buds. Currently blooming: dandelions, honeysuckle, pansies, violas, marigolds, petunias, red salvia, wild strawberries, verbena, lantana, sweet alyssum, zinnias, snapdragons, blue lobelia, perennial pinks, impatiens, oxalis, moss rose, yarrow, red coreopsis, anise hyssop, firecracker plant, tomatoes, tomatillos, Asiatic lilies, cucumber, astilbe, daylilies, snowball bush, yellow squash. 'Chocolate Sprinkles' tomatoes are starting to show color. Blackberries, and tomatoes have green fruit. Wild strawberries, mulberries, and black raspberries are ripe.
